COLUMBUS – Engine manufacturer Cummins, which has just reported 2021 sales of $24 billion, up 21% on 2020, continues to explore strategic alternatives for its Filtration business unit.
The company believes the separation will create value for both companies by enabling enhanced focus on key strategic initiatives, continued innovation in core and new technologies for Cummins, and greater focus and operating flexibility for the Filtration business. The method and timing of the separation are currently under evaluation.
Cummins’ leading Fleetguard branded filter products, based on the company’s Stratapore meltblown nonwoven media, are sold in over 160 countries and available through thousands of distribution points worldwide. The ability to manipulate its own media allows Cummins to optimise the performance levels of Fleetguard products in respect of the polymer, fibre diameter, pore size, thickness and permeability for every layer and number of layers. The ability to optimise individual sheets for desired particle-size removal provides StrataPore with increased total media filtration efficiency. Layering capabilities also allow StrataPore to provide nearly 50% reduction of filter restriction during cold start. With competing media, pore size must be reduced, increasing the pressure required to force oil through the media. The smaller range in StrataPore media results in more repeatable, controllable filtration performance.
For separating and retaining particles smaller than 4 µm, the nanofibres in Cummins’ 100% synthetic NanoNet filter media allow filtration performance to be fine-tuned beyond meltblown, wet-laid cellulose or glass media products.
Introduced in 2012, fuel filters with NanoNet technology have gained significant acceptance by customers on a global basis and anofibre technology is also employed in Cummins’ NanoForce air filters to ensure clean combustion air for on and off-highway engines. Cummins Filtration holds over 200 active global patents for product technology.
